• Typically fish by trolling in the ocean (i.e. fishing off the back of a moving boat). The boat usually goes about 7-10 knots (8-12 miles per hour).
  • Look for ocean water in the 63-65°F range.
  • Troll close to the boat, right in the white water wake about 50-70 feet behind the stern (rear).

Tackle & Equipment

Rod: 6-6 1/2 foot medium to heavy trolling rod with roller tip

Reel: 4/0 to 6/0 sized reel filled with at least 300 yards of 50 to 80 lb monofilament line

Lure & Bait


Live anchovies, 3 to 4 inches long (preferred)

Or, 4-10 oz. jig with chrome-plated or abalone-pearl head and natural feather or vinyl skirt

Hooks: 4/0 to 6/0
